Announcing - A new SQL Programming CTOD Course!

As all of you are probably aware, we are currently in the final stages of testing for the upcoming Clarion 7 and Clarion.NET releases. However, we still had time to put together a blockbuster training course just in time for the holidays.

This week, we will be releasing Course 7 of the CTOD series; "The SQL Programming Series"

Although I have always relied on the expertise of my colleagues around me, this course relied on the input from our entire support and development team. In total, this project involved over 360 man-hours of research. We consolidated and updated much of the material first presented in our Mastery training course, searched our internal Support database and the newsgroups for common stumbling blocks and questions, to give you the very latest and practical information for Clarion and SQL. And yes, much of the material was written with Clarion 7 and Clarion.NET in mind, so you will have a longevity that will be worth your investment.

Our primary goal for this course has been to create a one-stop, definitive reference to everything related to using Clarion with any SQL database.  I really think that we have achieved that goal.

We start at ground-zero with a refresher on SQL, then we go into the Built-In Driver and Dictionary Support, Driver strings, OWNER (Connection) strings, User Options, Column Options (Driver Switches), External Name, Relationships (Server Side), File Import and Conversion Wizard, Dictionary Synchronizer, Template Support, Extended Browse Options, Template Query Tools, and migrating from ISAM tables to a target SQL database.

For each backend the course covers (MS SQL, SQL Anywhere, Oracle, Firebird, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Pervasive SQL, and ODBC to connect to any backend) we go over advantages and disadvantages, importing tables into Clarion, application best practices, customizing using Driver strings, use of Prop:SQL (both how-to and when-to), using TurboSQL, Stored Procedures, server-side Triggers and client-side Triggers, Date-Time Field handling, creating the Right KEYs and INDEXes, and optimizing Browses.

And the course shows you how to setup and configure the server and client, and how to resolve problems with firewalls clashing with your backend.

We have really great examples for MS SQL, SQL Anywhere, Oracle, Firebird, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Pervasive SQL, and using the ODBC driver. We also talk about how and when to use the In-Memory driver and the Dynamic driver with your SQL backend.

We also have a lesson on SQL design tips and best practices that covers tips for all SQL backends, tips on starting your first SQL system, Property syntax, VIEWs, Indexing tips. Tracing tools, Add-on Driver support, specific tips regarding ODBC, creating proper Joins, Scalar functions, and using the ODBC API.

In all lessons, we have tried to document the path around each SQL databases' rough spots, so you don't have to. We hope that this course will be a great time saver to anyone using it. The entire SV team is really excited about this course!

On behalf of the SoftVelocity support and development team, let me be the first to wish you a happy and healthy holiday season, and may you each have continued success with your projects through the coming new year.

P.S. More details on the course will be up on the SoftVelocity website later today or Friday.

Bob,

Wow! I re-read that again and this time came away with a lot more. I think I may have to get this. I am SO pleased this was done with C7!

One question I have that I am not sure would be addressed in the upcoming details. Do you plan on having a written version of the lessons? PDF is fine. Reason is, after I do the course, I like a handy reference I can fall back on as needed. Kinda like the Help system. ;-)

Hi Russ,

I want to clarify something here. The examples and screen shots and flash movies are all using Clarion 6.3 Build 9055. However, each example has also been tested successfully in C7. So the concepts that we are presenting here will be good in the next release.
