Clarion 7 release to Core Subscribers Rated Excellent [5 out of 5].

The heading says it all.  On the Tuesday after the Labor Day weekend (Sept 4th), we’ll be sending out emails to all CSP owners with download instructions for Clarion 7.

The change from the original product rollout we had planned helps to move us a step closer to the gold release, and you’ll have the opportunity to get your hands on the IDE and the new 7.0 Runtime Library.  You can start to learn your way around and immediately make good use of the IDE and RTL while we’re working on finishing up the new Application Generator and the Dictionary Editor. There is so much great new technology in this release, that it’s hard to give a overview of it without skimming over or missing some little gem, but I’ll try a to give a short recap.

In no particular order you’ll get to workout these new components:

Project System –
Supports multiple projects in a single solution. So your multi-DLL application can be built from one Solution.  And since the Build runs on a separate thread you can keep right on working while the build is running.  And you’ll also have the ability to setup different versions of Clarion as the target for the build process of your application. So you can use the new IDE to build a C7 and a C6 version of your programs.

Text Editor –
All kinds of great features, like Code Folding, Code Snippets, Code Completion, Bookmarks, Task Lists, powerful Search/Replace, unlimited Undo/Redo, specify your
Own Fonts and colors, automatic or manual Code Formatting and Reformatting, and there’s all kinds of new navigation features including “Jump to Definition” or Declaration, and you’ll also have XML and HTML editing.

Class Browser –
The Class Browser is tied in with the Editor, so in addition to a view of the structure of your program, a single click in the Class Browser opens the associated source file and locates the cursor right to the item.

Database Browser –
All new and all coded in Clarion.Net.  It’s currently using the .Net DataGridView to present the data, but we’ll soon be moving it over to the Clarion.Net List control.  Just like its Win32 counterpart in C6 and C7, the new Clarion List control is perfect for Browsing data.

Window and Report Designers –
Both of the Designers (along with the Designers for Clarion.Net) share the same user interface, and have some great new features.  Check this blog for an overview http://www.softvelocity.net/community/blogs/clarion_news/archive/2007/06/14/1694.aspx

Dictionary Editor –
There’s too much to try to describe it all, so check this blog for a short movie showing off many of the new Dictionary Features.

Dictionary Diagrammer –
It’s all brand new, so go to this blog for a short movie showing off many of the new Diagramming features.

Help System –
The Help has been upgraded to the Microsoft HTML Help format (.CHM). In addition, the IDE is packed with links like the SoftVelocity Home Page, Blogs, Forums, the Problem Tracker System, and to the complete .NET Framework.

There is also a Quick Start Guide to help you hit the ground running, and the Interactive Training courses have been revised and rewritten for Clarion 7.

Ready for Vista –
OK that’s a given, but if you’ve moved over to Vista or have plans to do so, the IDE is right at home on Vista (or at least ready to endure Vista!)

Runtime Library UI Enhancements –
You’ll have all of the new features of the RTL available for your applications, from the support for Unicode and Clear Type, Tabbed MDI windows, Office XP/2003 styled Menus, XP Styled List control, four shiny new Sheet/Tab Styles, XP Styled Drop and Combo controls, and enhanced Encryption support in the TopSpeed driver.

With the introduction of so much new technology we know that it will take some time before you know all the ins and outs.  So while we finish up the remaining work you can jump in, learn the ropes, and start to reap the benefits.

Thank you Bob Z and Bob F and all the other Bobs and non-Bobs at SV. Thank you Bob Z for letting the CSPs get their hands and eyes on this now. It looks so beautiful. And it is very encouraging to see a lot of progress.

Thanks Robert. Excellent news! I appreciate this change from the original rollout plan! As it looks there is plenty to lay hands on with the current C7. Also, my classes and source code will be really exited from being tickled by the C7 compiler, and edited in the new IDE. I guess I can park UltraEdit32 now
Keep up the good work! :-)
